Amana Fridge – Defrost Problems – BBI BC2 BRF SBD SBI SRD Series

Electronic Control Board Rebuilds

Electronic Control Board Rebuilds

This write-up is brought to you by A PCB REPAIR COMPANY.

This Amana defrost controller is often sent in for repair.  Even more often, we get a question regarding defrost issues and how to determine if the controller is at fault.  Luckily, Amana has a test feature built in to all of the following models.  It is called “Force Defrost”.  Basically, if you open and close the door 4 times within 8 seconds the electronic controller will go into forced defrost so you can check the functionality.  Read on to get more deltails…

If you have an Amana/Maytag refrigerator series BBI BC2 BRF SBD SBI or SRD, you may be experiencing some of the following problems due to a worn out adaptive defrost controller.

  • Freezing/Icing Build-Up
  • Not Maintaining Cold Temperature
  • Warm Freezer
  • Compressor not Running

These models have a defrost controller that looks like this:

Electronic Defrost Control – 12050501, 12050504, 12050505, 12050506

Part numbers 12050501, 12050504, 12050505 and  12050506 have a simple troubleshooting technique to test defrost and compressor control.  This is from the Maytag documentation:

Forced Defrost

  • To force a defrost cycle, open and close either the freezer or refrigerator door light sw itch 4 times in a 8 second period. Allow atleast 1/2 second betw een each sw itch condition.

Important

  1.  The compressor must be operating w hen forcing defrost.
  2. The evaporator fan motor is fan delayed through the defrost thermostat and w ill not function after a defrost cycle until the defrost thermostat closes.
  3. To bypass the 6 minute dw ell time after a defrost or to terminate a forced defrost, disconnect pow er to the refrigerator for 30 seconds.

Input Voltage Readings and Checks

L1 to L2 – line voltage should be present w henever the refrigerator is powered.
K to L2 – line voltage should be present w ith cold control contacts closed.
T to L2 – line voltage should be present w hen cold control contacts are closed, defrost terminator is closed,
and adaptive defrost control is in defrost mode.
R to L2 – line voltage should be present w ith refrigerator door open (door light sw itch closed).
F to L2 – line voltage should be present w ith freezer door open (door light sw itch closed).
Outputs Voltage Readings and Checks
C to L2 – line voltage present w hen in refrigeration mode w ith cold control contacts closed.

Defrost, Condenser, Temperature, or Other Problems in KSS, KSC and other Whirlpool/KitchenAid/Kenmore/JennAir/Maytag Refrigerators

Time for another quality blog from FixYourBoard.com!

Whirlpool Corporation and its subsidiaries have made heavy use of this control board in their refrigerators, but now it is failing at a high rate after just having been obsoleted.  Lists of relevant part numbers and model numbers are available at the end of this article.

Your refrigerator may seem fine some or most of the time, but you get a sense that it’s on the way out – intermittent operation of various features, drooping temperature, etc.  This is likely because the power supply on its control board is failing.  Other common failures due to this board are that the condenser fan won’t run and the defrost heater doesn’t work.  The objective of this blog is to help you identify if the control board is the source of your refrigerator’s problems.     If you determine the board is bad, be sure to visit www.FixYourBoard.com to send it in for repair and get it back good as new – at a fraction of the cost of buying a new part or model!

You’ll want to have DC voltmeter handy.

The built-in refrigerators usually house the control board in the top of the unit, and it is relatively easy to access from the front side.  You can always reference www.appliancepartspros.com with your model number to see where the board goes in the unit.  We recommend that you cut the breaker to your appliance before taking it apart so as to minimize the risk of seriously harming yourself or the appliance through electrical shorts.  Once you have access to the board and can comfortably probe it with your voltmeter, be sure to keep all the connections in place and throw the breaker back on.  Below is an image of the control board with highlights of the necessary measurements.  Your board will still have all the wires connected, but you can still stick your meter probes down into the sockets alongside the wires.

The first thing to do,  is measure the DC voltage across pins 9 and 11 on the P7 wiring connector.  The meter should read right around 12VDC.

Now, on the main control panel, press and hold the filter reset button and then immediately press and hold the power button.   Holding both in simultaneously for few seconds should send the refrigerator into Service Diagnostic Mode.  Press the ‘temperature scroll up’ button until you are in Mode 4.  Repeat the above measurement.

If either the first or second measurements yield a reading less than 11.5 VDC, the power supply circuit in the control board has definitely failed and needs to be repaired.  Go to www.FixYourBoard.com, click on the ‘How To Ship’ tab, print out the shipping form, and send it in!

GE Refrigerator Icing Up?

At www.FixYourBoard.com this is a common question regarding refrigerators; does my control board need to be reconditioned?  How do I isolate the problem to the control board or other parts such as thermistors, defrost heater or defrost over temperature thermostat?  I will try to help here:

This applies to General Electric SxS (Side by Side), Arctica, Profile, Monogram, Bottom-Mount refrigerators.  Model series are ETS22, ESS22, ESS25, GSS20, GSS22, GSS25, GTS22, HTS22, HSS22, HSS25, PTS22, PTS25, STS22, SSS25 and more.  Below is a troubleshooting flow chart from GE documentation.

Make sure the fridge is unplugged before going through this troubleshooting exercise.   A deeper explanation follows the flowchart.

Step – Unplug refrigerator.  Unplug connector J9 from the main board.  Measure between blue wire and connector and orange (neutral) wire on main control board J7 pin 9.  Are there approximately 37 ohms?

Explanation: This step measures the defrost heater.  By unplugging it from the board, you are left with the defrost heater, bi-metal defrost switch and wiring to the control board.  If the resistance is much higher than 37 ohms.  It is the switch, defrost heater or wiring that needs to be replaced.

Step – Verify thermistors are within proper range using thermistor values chart.  Is the resistance within range.

Explanation: Using a D.V.M. (digital volt meter), the thermistors must have a resistance that corresponds to the correct temperature.  This can be a little tricky because you don’t know the actual temperature of the thermistor.  Your values don’t have to be exact, but they should be in the ball park of what you think the temperature is.  Here are three relevant values:

Room temperature (77 degrees F)  – 5,000 ohms

Freezing ( 32 degrees F)                – 16,300 ohms

Evaporator cold ( 23 degrees F)    – 21,000 ohms
